A recent installation of public art may be admired at the entrance of the county office building on 700 E. 4th Street. What might normally be a mundane government building (Second Ward) has now been transformed at the entrance with almost 100 cold cast glass panels echoing the shape of the dogwood, NC state flower. However, it is meant to be an abstract art piece. These panels hang by stainless steel air craft quality cables fully engineered to support this exquisite structure. At night you can see the cables. But during the day, they melt away into the background of the building.
I happen to be one of a nine member board of the Public Art Commission tasked with commissioning outstanding artists such as Ms. Sheng to help us define space in various public areas. It is an honor to be a part of this process. And with the involvement of the community, we bring art in some of our highly trafficked areas with the hope to engage the community for whom this work services. Artist Shan Shan Sheng, in my opinion, does a wonderful job with this abstract Dogwood piece. She combines color, form, and collaged movement to create a unique visual experience that hopefully will inspire and engage one’s imagination. I invite you to visit it the next time you are near downtown Charlotte.
